Brazilian blowouts and keratin treatments bond proteins to the outer layer of the hair, therefore smoothing and straightening the hair. A keratin treatment is a hair smoothing treatment that conditions, smooths and straightens dry frizzy hair. Keratin treatments do NOT cause damage to the hair follicle. Keratin treatments build up the hair. Keratin treatments do not break it down.
The bonding process happens during the hot blow-dry and flat iron application. Both Brazilian blowouts and keratin treatments remove frizz and add shine. The Brazilian blowout is the popular option, but not the best!! Before I get into the reasons why, let’s discuss these treatments in detail.
Most Brazilian blowout’s contain the active ingredient Methylene glycol. Methylene glycol at levels above 15 to 20% can be harmful and formed by the reaction of formaldehyde with water. Formaldehyde is a toxic substance, and since the reaction with water is reversible, products containing methylene glycol can, under some circumstances, release formaldehyde.
The keratin treatment I use is “Uberliss”. While Glyoxylic Acid is the straightening active ingredient, Uberliss has added a Diamine molecule to the Fiber Expander, which crosslinks with the Glyoxylic Acid, creating a conditioning mesh. The new system is now 100% Nano and also features a color guard for maximum color retention. And as always, Uberliss Keratin Treatment is 100% Formaldehyde and Methylene Glycol free! No toxicity, no fumes, no problem!
So when you choose, choose smart. Choose the right product and stylist.
